As we approach our 50th year of aircraft seating, Recaro Aircraft Seating faces a changing landscape that will require even more ingenuity to meet the challenges of the future.

Runway Girl Network sat down with CEO Mark Hiller to discuss how the seat manufacturer plans to build on its storied history to meet the changing needs of airlines and passengers, including their ongoing sustainability goals. Flexible cabs are expected to be part of that future in a number of ways.

Recaro already knows a thing or two about flexible cabs. A year ago, Air New Zealand approached Recaro with their Skycouch concept, a triple economy class seat that creates a generous space for passengers. The final design, praised by travelers around the world, is a collaboration between the two companies, notes Recaro.

But even before the Skycouch debuted, Recaro was developing seats to support European carriers' Eurobusiness configurations on single-aisle planes.

“In the 1990s, an innovative convertible seat was developed that could be converted from economy class to business class, especially for narrow bodies. For example, Lufthansa and British Airways have taken advantage of this, notes Hiller. "The product is now outdated, but the industry still lacks that to be a flexible concept."

Indeed, Recaro is already helping airlines adapt to the new Eurobusiness vision, as demonstrated by its work at TAP Air Portugal.

Modified Recaro 3510a Seats

In order to accommodate the flexible cabins of the future, Recaro focuses on the production of aircraft seats that provide passenger comfort and weight reduction, which are now required by airlines to reduce fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions.

The seat manufacturer is known to be an innovator on this front, offering things like a tall literature pocket on the seatbacks and/or a lightweight mesh pocket for personal items, which in turn increases the living space in the seat. .

Replacing the thick foam seat padding with a thin layer of foam also saves weight, allowing operators to add seats if desired.

"If the seats are the lightest ever and as quickly as possible, it's definitely about the flexibility to use the aircraft for different flights and markets," says Hiller. “The [Eurobusiness] convertible seat is a good inspiration, so it was born from the innovation that Recaro defined in the 1990s.

It will be interesting to see if airlines that offer a Eurobusiness configuration for middle tables will welcome the new one
