Although it has reached 50 years in the production of aircraft seats, Recaro Aircraft Seating faces a changing environment that will require more skills to meet the challenges ahead.

Runway Girl Network sat down with CEO Mark Hiller to discuss how the airline plans to draw on its storied history to meet the needs of airlines and passengers, including their key sustainability goals. Flexible housing, says Hiller, is expected to be part of the future in many ways.

Recaro already knows a thing or two about flexible cabins. Years ago, Air New Zealand approached Recaro with its Skycouch concept - a three-fold economy seat that creates a spacious passenger layout. The final design, loved by travelers around the world, represents a collaboration between the two companies, Recaro said.
But even before the Skycouch was launched, Recaro was building seats to support the European transport system for single-aisle aircraft.
“There was the development of a new convertible seat in the 1990s, a seat that can be changed between economy and business class, especially in the narrow ones. Lufthansa and British Airways have used this, for example," Hiller said. "The model is written now, but it's still something where the business is missing, to have a flexible vision."
Indeed, Recaro has already helped airlines embrace the new Euro business concept, as demonstrated by its work for TAP Air Portugal.

In order to accommodate the flexible cabins of the future, Recaro is focused on providing aircraft seats that provide passenger comfort and the kind of weight savings required for aircraft in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and ergo CO2 emissions.
The chair maker is known as an inventor in this area, offering, for example, the option of a large literature pocket on the seat and / or a heavy web pocket for carrying personal items, thus increasing the space in the sitting area.

Replacing thick foam with thinner foam also saves weight, allowing drivers to add seats if they choose.
"If the seats are the lightest, and as fast as they can be light, then of course it's about flexibility, how to use the plane for different flights and markets," said Hiller. "The convertible seat [Eurobusiness] is a great inspiration, so it was born from the innovation that Recaro introduced in the 1990s."
It will be interesting to see if the airlines that offer Eurobusiness center table sets will adopt a new version of this concept, like the recent ATR concept of X-Space. American airline Breeze Airways, for example, has also expressed its interest in a fast exchange.
Celebrating 50 years in the production of aircraft seats, Recaro is clearly strong in economy seats, but it also claims to be a major player in the development of the popular economy platform.

"In the 2000s, there was more emphasis on travel products, and the advent of the economy, we are proud to be one of the pioneers of the economy," said Hiller.
Eva Air and Virgin Atlantic each claimed to be the first airline to offer premium economy in the early 1990s, and they competed with Recaro's competitor in the industry.
But British Airways has brought improved economy to its long-haul flights. And in 2000, said a Recaro spokesman, the airline chose Recaro to supply its cabins and seats for the Premium Traveler 4400, which was called World Traveler Plus.

The value-based economy has enjoyed lasting popularity, especially over the past decade. And Hiller points to Emirates' new economic model, designed by Recaro, as proof of its effectiveness. CMF's performance on these seats is amazing.
Going forward, Recaro wants to bring premium product design to the premium economy segment. "Airlines will also want to talk about personality as you see in business class; you adjust the weather, the lights, according to your needs. We wonder how you can combine it, for example, with an app to have your own. passenger experience, something really special. This is very exciting to see what can be done in the future ,” he said.
It does this while focusing on delivering sustainable design and ensuring that its products are sustainable throughout their lifetime. "We can deal with both better now than ever by working together," Hiller said.
“First, we have done a lifetime test of our products; What is the carbon footprint of our products from design, production, use and recycling. This ensures that more than 90% of emissions are produced by product use. So, every time you can take something easy, even if the carbon footprint of the product is large, this reduces the total emissions. "

While looking 50 years into the future is a fool's errand, Recaro is willing to accept new challenges and, if nothing new and brilliant is found, more flexibility in the cabin could be the next step to success. travel in a steady wind.
